Since 2012, Mario Pfeifer travelled repeatedly to the Western Sahara region, a territory bordering Algeria in the North, Mauritania in the South and Morocco in the West. Considered by scholars as the last colony of Africa, the struggle for self-determination and freedom by the Saharawis, is since the Moroccan occupation 40 years ago a rather unknown conflict, but in it‘s complexity it is similar to situations in East-Timor or Palestine. Mario Pfeifer has engaged in extensive research in the region and in several participative video productions in both the occupied and the liberated territories. For his final phase of the project, the artist will work in the Saharoui refugee Camps in South Algeria‘s desert, where approx. 160.000 refugees live. For his project Pfeifer creates a vast, saturated and rich phenomenological moving imagery on high-resolution 4K video devices.
